Despite many challenges, the 2017 vintage looks to be an excellent one for Adobe Road Winery.
The vast majority of our grapes — 80 to 85 percent — had already been harvested by the time the Sonoma and Napa fires started, and so they escaped fire and smoke damage. And, we’re extremely happy with the high quality of that fruit, from whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay to signature reds such as Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and more.
Two Premium Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons Added
Despite the fact that Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be one of the last grapes left on the vine each season, we’ve got some extremely good news — Adobe Road will add two exciting new premier single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons to our collection of wines with the 2017 vintage.
We just finished pressing some amazing grapes from Lichau Hill Vineyards in Sonoma County’s Petaluma Gap. Lichau is a small, hand-tended vineyard growing 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s located not far from the Sangiacomo Family’s Roberts Road Vineyard, where we source some of the most prestigious Pinot Noir grapes available. Many wineries sought this delicious, small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon fruit and we’re excited to bring it to Adobe Road.
Adobe Road Winery is also thrilled to be adding Cabernet Sauvignon from a fantastic pedigree in Napa’s Sage Canyon. This vineyard is adjacent to the original Charles Pritchard homestead, high above Napa’s Lake Hennessey, home to Bryant Family Vineyard, Chappellet, Colgin, Continuum and David Arthur. The vineyard escaped the fires and smoke, just like Petaluma’s Lichau Hill, and the mountain fruit is very expressive of the terroir.
We’re excited about 2017 and the great quality wines that will result from a fantastic harvest.
We were honored to share our Adobe Road Winery flagship wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyards, Georges III Block A1 at this year’s Wine Spectator Wine Experience at the Marriott Marquis New York City October 19-21.
Adobe Road was asked to participate and was honored to be amongst some of the top wineries in the world. Our 2013 Beckstoffer A-Block Cabernet Sauvignon received a stellar 94 point score from The Wine Spectator and to be listed as the highest-rated wine made from this very special vineyard owned by Andy Beckstoffer, is very exciting. Perhaps even more impressive for us was the way in which our wine was received by everyone who attended the Wine Experience last weekend.
Almost 5,000 people sampled the over 260 wines at this year’s 37th Wine Experience, celebrating the world’s very best. This benchmark event is a can’t miss annual event for wine lovers year after year. The response to our highly acclaimed Beckstoffer Cabernet Sauvignon was out of this world -- our wine was deemed one of the very best in both Critics’ Choice Grand Tastings by this great group of wine aficionados amongst some of the most famous wineries in the world. People loved our wine and came back to our booth again and again for more. “Your wine was, I believe, the Wine of the Show, although the Chateau d’Yquem was a close second,” enthused attendee and new Adobe Road Wine Club member Jerry A. Rosenblatt.
Of course, Adobe Road Winery is known for putting the customer first and CEO Kevin Buckler and Director of Hospitality Sonny Martin made sure each and every Wine Experience guest received their share -- we were, as always, one of the first wineries to arrive and one of the last to leave each evening.
We were pleased to connect and entertain our Adobe Road Winery partners and friends at the show. Bob Garthwait managed to taste over 250 wines presented at the show -- this was his 31st New York Wine Experience in a row.
Expanding the scope and reach of Adobe Road is always a goal, and on this front, we were very successful as well. We are pleased to announce that Adobe Road wines will now be featured in most of New York City’s preeminent steak houses as well as some very prestigious retailers like “America's oldest” Acker Merrall & Condit and our friends at Beacon Wine and Spirits. In addition, we’ve broadened our market share by making placements in a number of regions including Florida, Nevada, Texas, Indiana, Maryland, Connecticut, Michigan and Canada, as well as working on opening distribution in Bermuda, Illinois and Arizona. Sonny really has been busy this year! So many new markets are excited about the 2013 Cabernet that we are getting close to being sold out (click here to purchase the 2013 Beckstoffer Cabernet Sauvignon or any of our other acclaimed wines).
All and all, we couldn’t have asked for a more successful weekend connecting with wine lovers, partners, reuniting with friends and winemakers and strengthening our share of the competitive wine marketplace.

It is always a good feeling to be a part of something ground breaking. The global wine community is certainly no exception. Adobe Road Winery is extremely honored to have been selected to join Wine Spectator’s ultra-exclusive New York Wine Experience, October 19-21 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York City. This three-day event is a spectacular showcase of more than 250 of the world’s most unique and notable wine producers. Each producer has been rated 90+ by Wine Spectator’s board of editors and awarded a Critics’ Choice Award. Guided by the estate owners and winemakers themselves, this occasion provides attendees with possibly the most comprehensive wine tasting experience possible. Each attendee will have a chance to sample all of the featured wines, as well as meet the winery owners and winemakers. The event is enhanced with educational wine seminars, food pairings designed by distinguished chefs, and a black tie gala of the wine world’s most prestigious producers.
Owner Kevin Buckler and national sales manager, Sonny Martin, will pour the 2013 Adobe Road Napa Valley Beckstoffer Georges III Block-A Cabernet Sauvignon, which Wine Spectator awarded a stunning 94 points. Kevin and Sonny will also acquaint patrons with the award winning boutique brand and the exciting new winery project being developed and based at the gateway to California Wine Country in Petaluma. Adobe Road sources the very best grapes from Napa and Sonoma counties, producing a wide variety of single-vineyard sources and blended wines that are being recognized at the highest levels.
This credibility greatly enhances the already respected Adobe Road brand and shines even more attention on the Petaluma development project, which will see the winery expand to a new 15,000 square foot facility, anchoring the city’s downtown waterfront development. This new industry-leading complex will include the winery, tasting room, event space, outdoor entertainment area, multiple private VIP and corporate areas as well as a rotating multi-brand motorsports museum, carrying forward the legacy that has been achieved by Adobe Road’s sister company, The Racers Group.

Wine grapes can really take on a slew of flavors. First, here’s a little science.
Wine grapes are special because they can contain up to 600 molecular components. These components allow them to create a wide breadth of different flavor and aroma profiles.
There are many molecular components that make up the various building blocks that create flavors and aromas we associate with a variety of things like cherry, chocolate, tobacco, grass or currants. Cherry, for example, is a very specific combination of chemical compounds called phenols.
You might wonder why you pick up things like plum or nectarine or green grass when you smell and drink wine.
Start with the simple, short chains of polyphenols that excess primary flavors and aromas like stone fruit (peaches, nectarines and apricot), cherry, plum and green apple. We picked and crushed this year’s Viognier just a few weeks ago. If you’d been blindfolded, you would have sworn you were drinking freshly pressed apple juice.
Or, the molecules can combine to create more complex flavor profiles. More complex aromatics — truffle, tobacco, leather and barnyard for instance, are formed with longer and longer chains of polyphenols. The longer the chain, the more complex the aromatic or flavor it expresses.
So, next time you’re enjoying a glass of Adobe Road wine, really take the time to engage all of your senses. And remember how the wine grapes blinded you with science.
This week, we were out sourcing Petite Sirah grapes from Gary Branham Estate in the Rockpile AVA. This area is famous for Petite Sirah. The combination of elevation, terrain and a unique climate make this growing region like no other in Sonoma County, California, or the world, for that matter. And we’re particularly proud to bring back our single vineyard Petite Sirah designated bottling with these luscious Branham grapes.
You can’t drive out to Rockpile in the dark -- it’s about two hours north of Petaluma and north of Lake Sonoma, out in the middle of nowhere. By the time you’re greeted by the Rockpile Ranch fence and the sign that says “end of the road,” you’ve got another 30 minutes to go on dirt and gravel to get to the Branham Estate.
Our winemaker, Garrett Martin wouldn’t be deterred. He trekked out earlier this week at the very end of daylight and spent the night in his car (“I’m sure glad I don’t have that Mini anymore,” he said”), waking up at first light to oversee the picking of some amazing Petite Sirah fruit. Our beautiful little caviar of Petite Sirah arrived at Adobe Road Winery later in the afternoon.
Adobe Road Winery aligned with Disney and Hollywood Records recently to produce a premium promotional leave-behind piece to promote the top-10 single Reminding Me by Shawn Hook with Vanessa Hudgens.
Disney and Hollywood Records asked us to create something memorable to help promote the single to radio program directors across the country, and so Adobe Road got right to work. Music marketing is white hot space for all three brands and this opportunity really gives Adobe Road a huge opportunity to harness some pivotal various lifestyle elements to enhance our branding and promotion of the video.
Our Favorite Cherry Red
In the song Reminding Me, Shawn remembers a favorite wine he shared with his former love -- our favorite cherry red. Using that lyric as a hook, we decided to create a custom label for 100 bottles of our 2012 Pinot Noir (with its cherry red notes and color) to bring the lyrics to life and to invoke the memories that were so central to the song. The final product is a piece that Disney, Hollywood Records and Shawn love, showcasing Shawn and aligning him with the Adobe Road brand. Our partnership is also creating media and promotional opportunities for our winery.
We expect you’ll hear more about our partnership with Disney, Hollywood Records and Shawn (who has ordered more custom bottles for himself) in the very near future.
Harvest is here. It’s our busiest time of the growing season. The weather has really thrown many growers for a loop and now that fruit is being picked, the order the grapes are coming in is, well… different. For example, this week, we’re picking Viognier, Zinfandel (Famighetti Vineyard) and Sauvignon Blanc (Bavarian Lion). We picked Chardonnay last week. Normally, Sauvignon Blanc would be the first varietal to hit our winery.
It so happens that there is a chance of rain late this week just as grapes are scheduled to be picked, and this is coming right on the heels of a big weekend heat wave. How does all of this affect the grapes on the vine?
Heat can certainly spike sugar ripeness and this can impact the picking schedule. Moist conditions can give way to powdery mildew and this is definitely a concern now, as it has been most of the growing season. But there is a silver lining.
When moist conditions are followed by warmer weather, humidity and wind, something very magical happens. Botrytis cinerea, commonly referred to as “noble rot” is extremely beneficial to the taste of the wine in your glass. How?
Botrytis extracts water without changing the grapes’ acid to sugar ratio. As a matter of fact, this is the only way grapes can intensify their juice to create the sweet nectar that’s known as a dessert wine, like our late harvest Semillon, which is nicely resting in barrels. French Sauternes like Chateau Yquem which might be the best known, is essential Botrytis-affected Semillon, just like our sweet nectar.
Our Redline blend is always popular. So popular, that we’re essentially sold out of our last vintage.
Adobe Road Winery owner Kevin Buckler and winemaker Garrett Martin got to work. They wanted to create a blend that was of extremely high quality but at a reasonable price point, something that would be great to purchase and open up with a weeknight dinner but would deliver like a weekend wine.
Redline is an awesome California red blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, two varietals that aren’t often matched together, along with Syrah, Petite Syrah and Malbec. What you get in the glass is a super approachable, big blend with cherry and dark berry fruits combined a hint of spiciness, aged in toasty French oak with enough tannin and acidity to hold together and match up with a variety foods. Plus it’s fresh. We’ll bottle our brand new 2016 Redline -- and get it ready for your glass -- later this month.
