2018 Chardonnay Bacigalupi

This Chardonnay leads off with butterscotch and pineapple, with notes of wet rocks in the background. The palate is creamy and round with spiced pear and graham cracker crust, lifted and balanced by a fresh acidity. This is a big Chardonnay with lots of pretty details.

Winemaker’s Notes: This wine comes from an incredible farming family in the Russian River. The Bacigalupis have been growing since 1956, and their chardonnay grapes were a famous component of the wine that won the 1976 Paris Tasting against notable French wines. In 2018, some of those original vines remained, surrounded by newer plantings of Chardonnay that were propogated using budwood from the old vines, genetic clones. This wine is extremely special because I was able to harvest equal portions from old vines in their last year of life, and new vines in their first harvest year. The new fruit gives exuberance and energy, while the old vines provide structure, depth, elegance.

At the winery grapes are whole cluster pressed directly to barrel where they ferment and undergo partial malolactic conversion while lees are stirred. Some larger 70 gallon barrels from the French forest of St Palais were sourced to balance the new oak influence and lend a sense of grace to the wine.

The Vintage: 2018 vintage allowed for picking at the perfect moment. Throughout Sonoma County and Napa, moderate weather lead to perfectly ripe grapes. As always, the quality work of our vineyard partners like the Bacigalupis set the stage for incredible wines to be made!
